What is the 1/3 rule for tile?

The 1/3 rule for tile is a layout method where each row of rectangular tiles is offset by one-third of its length, rather than the traditional half-offset (brick pattern). This technique, also called the 33% offset, is commonly used for long tiles and helps reduce lippage, which is the unevenness between tiles, creating a smoother, more professional finish.

How it works

Instead of having each tile overlap the one below it by 50%, you shift each new row's tiles by only one-third of the tile's length.
This creates a more contemporary and subtle look, especially with large-format planks, while minimizing the visual effects of tile warping or "bowing".
